The Source for Learning (formerly the Network for Instructional TV—NITV) is a leader in the use of technology to deliver instructional materials. In 1983, NITV began acquiring special TV channels reserved by the Federal Communications Commission for education-related entities to broadcast instructional programs to classrooms. The FCC calls these channels the Educational Broadband Service, or EBS. Today, The Source for Learning and our associated organizations hold EBS licenses in 22 cities in thirteen states and the District of Columbia. The FCC realizes that EBS licensees like The Source for Learning, after providing their educational services, often have excess channel capacity available. That excess capacity can be made available to others in exchange for important royalties to the not-for-profit licensees. Some of our channel capacity is now used to provide WiMax services to educators and first responders in cooperation with commercial operators such as Clearwire, Sprint, and Xanadoo. It’s an innovative, effective partnership between education and business—the royalties from commercial partners provide an income stream that helps support our educational and charitable activities. The Source for Learning plans to make the SFLMedia service of online resources available for educators in its EBS markets beginning in the 2010-2011 school year. |
